PSR™ Method
(Presentation Skills & Reading)

How many of your staff talk too fast?

There are seven elements in the PSR™ Method.

Here are three examples which show the importance of learning the PSR™ Method.

Beginning and ending sentences.

I've been asking actors, executives and broadcasters for fifteen years what three vital things you must do at the end of a sentence (and I don't include stop and breathe), and no one has given me the answer!

You might think that someone like Tony Blair would have sufficient training to communicate effectively. He leaves most of his sentences open which reflects a lack of knowledge or indecision. This does not give confidence to the listener.

Finding ‘mental commas’.

Here’s an example of how easy it is to get it wrong:
read the following two lines and notice the comma has been moved.
This simple change completely alters the meaning of the sentence!
I hope it makes you smile!

Woman, without her, man would be lost.

Woman, without her man, would be lost.

Read and speak slowly.

About 73 % of us talk too fast, including most broadcasters!
Talking too fast makes you sound less confident and nervous. This makes it difficult for your listener to keep up with you.
By speaking at a slower pace, your listener is able to retain more information and will have more confidence in what you say.

The following scripts are an exercise to test the speed and flexibility of your verbal communication.
There are seven elements in the PSR Method, controlling your speed is one of them.

If you want to record yourself, you can download free recording software for your computer at
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
You can of course also use a cassette, CD recorder or dictation machine.

Time yourself reading the following scripts, using our stopwatch - click here to open it in a separate window.

When both these scripts have been read, click the button below to find the correct timing.
